During the beginning phases of researching Implicit Bias I was amazed to have found examples of many other pro-black and empowering activists and how many of them had attended some of the nation’s highest quality universities. Such as Spellman, Howard, and Tuskegee all HBCUs as well. Noticing this makes me reflect and notice all the advantages I have that my grandparent’s great grandparents and ancestors didn’t have. While doing further research I was deeply embellished into the history of racial psychology with Dr. Beverly Tatum only scratching the surface of a progressive iceberg. I had come to soon discover the history of many other empowering black women such as Angela Davis being a graduate from UC Berkeley majoring in psychology and minoring in economics and soon to be the leader of the Vallejo Ca Black Panther Party. Another great black female Psychologist Inez Prosser who had originally taught some of the original ideas of cognition bias after graduating from Texas A&M. These historical events are very meaningful to me because they reminded me of the strong empowering women from my family.
However, prior to conducting this research into cognitive bias psychology, I had fairly minimal knowledge of basic general psychology. Along with general psychology, I had minimal knowledge of all the different interesting types of behaviors and the reason for humans doing them. The fact that psychologists are able to measure behavior and determine the root cause of that behavior is incredible to me and makes me see psychology as less of a science and more of an art. Due to the requirement of creativity and innovation to decide how the brain works without ever seeing the brain. This information has completely morphed my perspective of neuro functionality and the complexity of my brain. The fact that I have this supercomputer taking massive amounts of information all at once and then determining what to do with it. This meat supercomputer in my head is far more powerful and complex than I understand and this absolutely motivates me to determine methods of using my brain better.
One skill I’ve learned through writing during this project was writing in an article format. This will be a crucial and important skill to know in college in case an important assignment is related to multi-genre writing projects in the future. These skills consist of in-text citations as well as learning the functionality of insert functions. Lastly, I learned important research skills using google scholar for determining the scholarly articles necessary to fulfill a high quality work quota. I’ve demonstrated clear and evident accurate use of an in-text citation in my first map genre piece. As well as evidence of using insert functionality to create an article format.
The strongest points of my project started at the beginning where I was more motivated and more attracted to writing about cognitive bias. This is evident due to my high accountability toward the beginning of the project. However after a while toward the end of the project I was burnt out quickly and tired of the subject matter and it made it increasingly difficult to finish work related to the project. This would be considered my low this was evident as well because my overall grade decreased toward the end of the project. Due to the chaotic times, this project has made it through I feel as if the grade to best represent my performance on this task provided by a 3.5.
